Refrigerators Meat Their Match With LED Lights

Kansas State University researchers compared meat refrigerators with different lighting technologies and revealed that LED lights extend products’ shelf life for the longest time. LED lights came out the winner in three different tests – measuring the rate of discoloration, rancidity, and efficiency – scoring the bowling equivalent of a turkey.

These findings are not surprising, given that LED light sources do not emit heat. The most common refrigerator lights are fluorescent. Not only do these lights contribute to a higher ambient temperature (which speeds up spoiling), but the glass bulbs are prone to breakage.

LED lights, on the other hand are solid-state and safely housed in plastic. (So even extremely ham-fisted operators won’t shatter them.) Also worth noting is that the wavelengths of LEDs delay discoloration – a major factor in shoppers’ buying decisions.

Considering the energy efficiency, the delayed rate of spoilage (meaning less unsold beef that must be marked down or worse, chucked out), and the reduced need for replacements, LED lighting has emerged as the best, most money-saving option for commercial refrigeration units. So if you’re in the meat business and your fluorescent lights are giving you beef, don’t be a chicken! Join the LED Revolution.

A Slam “Dunk” for Energy Savings

Dunkin Donuts is celebrating their 500th store opening this Saturday in Chicago, Illinois: home of the first coffee shop over 50 years ago (and namesake for our acclaimed PAR30 LED light bulb made in the USA). Their new location boasts energy upgrades such as LED light fixtures and water-saving toilets and sinks. Free WiFi ensures fewer newspapers littering the store.

The grand opening of the high-efficiency Dunkin Donuts at 3206 W 111th Street will feature giveaways and special appearances by local Chicago celebrities like NBA mascot Benny the Bull. The first 500 patrons get a store mug and a $2 gift card, and everyone in attendance will be entered to win one of five $100 gift cards, two pairs of Bulls tickets, two pairs of Blackhawk tickets and a bike.

There are a lot of [secret and not-so-secret] Dunkin Donuts fanatics in the LED Waves office, so we’re happy to hear of this new eco-conscious direction for the company. If America runs on Dunkin, then by association America will be running on lower energy.

James Monroe Elementary Joins the LED Revolution

A Washington school made local headlines last week when it switched all its overhead lights to LED panels. The conversion at James Monroe Elementary is believed to be the first one of its scale in a US public school.

According to King 5 News, “Many teachers at the school say the LED light is a ‘warmer light,’ better for teaching and learning. One kindergarten teacher said she no longer needs her reading glasses in the classroom.”

Each LED panel light is estimated to last 15 years, so school officials are excited about the return on their investment with the replacement costs and energy savings. The new lights also offer controls – unlike fluorescent technology. Dimming does not affect the LEDs’ color temperature – unlike incandescent technology.

It’s always great to hear about schools joining the LED revolution because they stand to save so much on energy. When you think about the electricity-powered devices in an average grade school classroom, there isn’t a lot beyond HVAC and lighting. (Except for the few occasions when a teacher pushes in the AV cart and everyone gets to watch a video – by the way, that ruled! But only a little bit more than energy-efficient lights.)

Longer Lasting LEDs Let You Repurpose Your Ladder!

The outstanding lifespan of LED lights allow adopters to go longer and longer without replacements. Take, for example, our Midtown LED recessed light fixture. We build it ourselves here in Brooklyn using only Cree’s XLamp XP-G chips.
the Midtown LED recessed light fixture in black
The XP-G was chosen specifically for our down light because it’s the brightest + most efficient chip for directional lighting applications. It’s also the first LED that’s racked up 10,000 hours of LM-80 test data, which really speaks to its long lasting performance.

Once the Midtown LED recessed light is installed in the ceiling it’s kind of a set-it-and-forget-it type of deal; you can take that ladder out of commission, enjoy the energy efficiency and quality of light and not even think of replacements for years – maybe even a lifetime.

What to do with that ladder in the meantime? If you have no other high-altitude home improvements on the horizon, why not make some cool shelves out of it? After all, we could all use some more storage space.

You can add a couple of boards to make a full-sized bookcase:

Add length and drama with multiple ladders and longer boards:

Or go the easy route and just prop the ladder against the wall for a quick-and-dirty tchotchke display:

Happy DIY! More ladder-upcycling ideas here.

LED Track Lighting, Two Ways

LED lights provide the best solution for track systems, hands down. With low-wattage, they create less wear and tear on a low voltage power supply (while saving money on electric bills). They also last longer, allowing users to go years without replacements. And since they’re directional, LEDs are perfect for track and cable systems, which are essentially a series of spot lights.

Our Flex II LED track lighting kit with NeoCone fixtures, featured at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.

LED Waves has everything you need for LED track lighting. We recently introduced the 12V TrackWave and the Flex II kits to our online store. Each kit comes with ten feet of track and mounting hardware, a power supply, and a number of fixtures + LED MR16 light bulbs in the beam angle and color temperature of your choice. These kits are an excellent option for new constructions.

Some track systems take Edison-base bulbs rather than bi-pin bulbs. For those, see our LED spot light bulbs ranging from PAR16 to PAR38. The PAR number refers to the size of the light head: Divide it by 8 to get the diameter in inches. KNOWLEDGE.

The Agios Nikolaos III is a new addition to our LED PAR16s. Its sleek design complements any track fixture. The Agios Nikolaos III a 7.5 Watt replacement for a 65 Watt incandescent bulb, and it’s dimmable, too! Built with Cree XLamp XP-G LEDs, the brightest LED technology available.

Contact us if you have any additional questions about LED track lighting. Whether your questions are about quantity pricing, beam angles, color temperature, or power supplies – LED Waves has the answers to get you on the right track!
