The Project
Virgin Media, the United Kingdom’s first “quadruple play” media company provides a grand slam of services — broadband, fixed-line telephone, television, and mobile phone — for 12 million plugged-in, jacked-in, tuned-in, and on-the-go Brits every day.
In December 2008, Virgin Media once again transformed UK’s Broadband Market with an ultrafast 50Mb Broadband Service, a seismic leap in speed that is nearly nine times faster than the average for broadband access in the UK.
At the Broadband Launch Party, British pop singer and television star Rachel Stevens “connected” the charged ends of the blazing new fiber optic network. Event Producers Drive Productions Ltd. Chose LED*Waves’ Neon Flex LED Rope Light to represent the glowing glass fibers, scorching a fiery red path through the venue’s stage.
LED*Waves’ Involvement
LED*Waves advised Events Producers Drive Productions Ltd. to use four strands of Red Neon Flex LED Rope Light in a transparent flexible hose, symbolizing billions of hyper cyber bytes waiting to rush into living rooms and offices. The twisting red rope light created a candy-cane treat for Launch attendees, luminescing like LED eye candy inside the striated clear tubes.
“Neon Flex was very bright and worked really well,” said Events Producer Troy Morgan. “Each strand was wired on a separate channel on our lighting desk so we could program a ‘chase’ meaning that the cable could flash and oscillate. At the end of each cable was a custom prop ‘plug and socket,’ each lit internally with LEDs again on separate channels of the lighting desk. [LED*Waves] supplied the Neon Flex cable and fittings that [our] propmakers formed into two pairs of four strands encased in a transparent flexible sleeve.”
The pairing of LED technology and broadband technology is a match made in digital heaven, married by Moore’s Law that says light chips and bit rates will double in efficiency and speed, respectively, every 18 months!
