McClintock Station, Phoenix Light Rail
Tempe, AZ
The Project
Two green technologies, light rail and LEDs, converge at McClintock Station in Tempe, Arizona, just in time for Phoenix METRO Light Rail's December 2008 opening. The $1.4 billion tram construction project started in 2005 and will give Earth-conscious commuters the satisfaction of sailing along 20 plus miles of Phoenix streets and terrain via quiet, exhaust-free trains.
Servicing two of the major thoroughfares in Tempe, McClintock Station is an oasis of culture. Palm trees sway over red and grey brick streets that are infused with Native American murals replicating sunsets and sunflowers. Blending southwestern elegance and history are two twenty foot columns inscribed with relief text of Native American Wisdom and lit with LED majesty. The two pillars are designed to mark sunlight according to the season; they flank the Station's entrance as graceful, glowing monuments to Arizona's rich heritage.
LED*Waves' Involvement
LED*Waves provided Phoenix METRO Light Rail with two twenty foot of sections of custom Cool White LED Mississippi lights that illuminate the pillars of Native American text with clarity and beauty. The two arrays of linear lights are set at different color temperatures, creating two distinct and gorgeous LED bars, like vertical streaks against the cool desert sky.
With LED*Waves and Phoenix's new Streetcar Named Efficiency, commuters will always arrive on time, and with The Earth on their minds.
